wellness.
Resident Circle:
The residents of Cogswell Hall have their own resident circle to bring forth ideas, address concerns of group living, and to effect agency policy. The resident circle is open to all residents and meets at least monthly.
When the resident circle first began, it was largely staff-led.
Over time residents realized the resident circle was a forum where they could deal with problems and effect a solution. With that realization came an amazing sense of community and growth. Residents now work together to reach a consensus and share the responsibilities of community living.
Within the group, strong bonds are built and a caring support group is created. As one supportive services staff member said, "They are sisters, in the truest sense of the word... Some of them come from such chaos and dysfunction but they are able, able in a way I am not, to understand one another."
In the past, when one resident made decisions that negatively affected the community, fellow residents did not have an effective way to intervene. Through participation in the resident circle, residents have learned peer led problem solving. They do not reproach each with anger or accusations. Instead residents will organize an intervention, and express affection and genuine concern.
It is that sincerity and spirit that makes Cogswell Hall a home.
